Hey Google To Take That PPC And Shove It – Banner Ads Are An Awesome MLM Lead Generator

February 24th, 2010 at 20:30

Have you heard the nasty rumors going around about some of the biggest PPC advertisers in the MLM business getting slapped and their accounts shut down? If you haven’t, beware of the Oogle monster coming to get you and take your “Get Rich Quick” ads down regardless if they are advertising that or not.

In steps my favorite MLM lead generation paid strategy, banner ads! You might be thinking, those things are old school and they don’t work. On the contrary my friend, I am generating between 5-10 lazer targeted leads per day. I am going to let you in on the secrets that I use to generate these leads with banner ads.

Keyword research isn’t a secret, but it is crucial when banner advertising. Find a keyword that is getting a lot of traffic and then search it in Oogle and see what the sites return for that word. Go to several sites and identify which ones have banner ads running. See if you can find the sites that have advertising available and contact them about running your ads. Realize that most of these sites will have prices set that are higher than you can get them other places, but the traffic will be more targeted. If the sites don’t have any ad spots you can contact one of the following companies that sell banner ad spaces: BuySellAds, BlogAds, etc.

The good thing about this kind of searching is that even if the site you want isn’t available, you can use the demographics of the site to find other places to put your ads. Understanding the demographics is key in banner advertising. You don’t want your ads running on a site whose demos are Young girls when your product is meant for males between 35-43. Quantcast and Alexa are two great sites for starting your demographics search.

We know our target market and what they are searching, why don’t we get our banners. If you are representing an MLM or affiliate, they will probably already have stock banners. If they don’t you can make some yourself in Photoshop or have an outsourcer handle them for you. You can get some really good banners for a couple of hundred dollars or less. Usually, I will make my own or get them made because I know that everyone else that has access to the stock banners will be using them. I like to stand out from the crowd for some reason.

Now comes the great part for those PPC guys out there. When placing banner ads, you can choose to either pay per click (familiar, huh) or by cost per mille (CPM). The even better news is that a lot of PPC guys are used to paying 2-3 bucks per click where, with banners, you can often get clicks for less than $1. The double better news is that the CPM method gets even cheaper. With CPM, you are paying per thousand impressions on the website you are advertising. It isn’t uncommon to get CPMs for under 75 cents and you will often find that you get a couple clicks CPM, which makes your CPC (cost per click) around 38 cents.

Last, you need to decide if want to send you leads to directly to your offer or to a landing page. If your offer is over $50 you will be better to send all traffic to a carefully scripted landing page to increase conversions. If you choose not to send them to a landing page, your conversion will likely suffer.

I realize banner ads are not as sexy to most as PPC, but your conversions can be the same and cost less with this method of advertising. If you are looking to pick up the pieces after getting the Google Slap, look to banner advertising to get your lead generation back on its feet and generating that steady stream of MLM leads that you have become accustomed to.
