The lake is located near the small city of Quitman, Texas on the northern edge of the state in Wood County. This quaint city is a relaxing escape for many trying to get away from the big city for awhile. Lake Fork fishing is famous in this area.

If you’re planning a fishing trip to this lake and want to know when the best time to go is, here are some things to consider. This is trophy bass country and bass like to stay in the water temperature between 65 and 75 degrees. If it is too hot they are going to go deeper making it harder for you to catch them. During the summer fishing at night or on a cloudy day would be most favorable.

This lake is mainly known for its Largemouth Bass however there are other varieties of fish residing within the lake as well. There are Bluegill and a couple different species of Crappies and Catfish. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department established this lake and stocked it with over seven hundred thousand Florida Black Bass between 1979 and 1987. Each year around three hundred thousand visitors come here to fish for the big bass.

All year round there is great fishing here it just depends on what you are fishing for. During the spring, fall and winter the bass are plentiful. Crappies are available in the winter and Bluegills in the summer.

The Legend of Lake Fork is a 3 day event held every year in May. This year the winners can go home with prizes and cash awards totaling $237,000. Cash prizes are given to the biggest fish by weight. They must also be at least 24 inches or more in length. The winning bass in 2009′s event was 13.11 pounds. Due to the success of last year’s tournament they decided to add an extra day to the schedule.

There are five days during the months of February through May when they host the Lake Fork Team Trail Tournament. Only two people to a team are allowed. They can bring photos back of the fish for consideration as winners if they cannot catch one with a length of at least 24 inches to bring back in. They receive their official photo cards when they register and have their cameras inspected before going on the lake. Bringing in the winning fish or photo of the winning fish will earn them $500.

This year it will host the first World Championship Bass Fly Fishing Tournament. It will be held in May. First place prize will be $1200. Fishing may be from a boat, float tube, pontoon or the bank. Only rods, reels and flies made exclusively for fly fishing are allowed.
