How To Keep Your Household Items Safe
September 3rd, 2010 at 9:19It is easy to feel like everything in your home is safe just because you keep your doors locked and bring things inside to protect them from the elements. The truth is damage can still be done to the things you care about the most. There are a number of precautions that allow you to maintain the quality of your belongings. If you take a few minutes to secure everything, you will be pleased with how much the life of your belongings is extended and how safe you feel. Investing a little time and money can provide you peace of mind and safe you money in the long run. Just a few changes can provide you with peace of mind. To protect expensive furnishings, try a piano cover or general furniture coverings. This will keep wood and fabric from fading. Piano bench covers protect the entire piece from damage.
Another problem created by sun exposure is damage to floors. The sun’s rays fade both wood floors and carpets. Use area rugs to protect areas of flooring that are exposed to sun through the windows. Rugs also keep wear down from foot traffic. Determine what pathways run through your home and place area rugs over the areas that are most exposed to foot traffic. Consider entryways, hallways, and areas directly in front of furniture. You may also want to place an area rug under dining room and kitchen tables to block food spills from damaging wall to wall carpeting.
Another way to prevent sun damage is by using curtains that offer protection and high quality windows. This will block the light from damaging and fading your carpets and furniture. Sunblocking windows still let in light so your home will not be dark, but it blocks the harmful rays from causing damage. Shades will darken a room, but you can open and close them whenever you want, keeping your items from being exposed during the most damaging hours of the day.
Protecting your items from sun damage and wear is not the only thing you can do to protect your home. Be sure your house is protected from burglars by installing a security system. This helps you feel secure about your home when you are not on the premises and it will help you and your family feel better when you are at home. An alarm system alerts you to problems and can even contact the police in an emergency.
Remember that the sun is not the only thing that can create damage in your home. Aside from burglars, consider the damage flooding can create. Insurance for flooding can save you a great deal of money and headaches. However, if your home is exposed to water damage, there is a chance flood insurance will not help. Prepare for flooding by being aware of any potential problems and dealing with them in advance.
