There’s a place that my husband and I often go to hike. It is so magnificent! Just the name of it gets our minds in the mode of running free and unencumbered by life’s problems and stresses. This location is so breathtaking that we become like the off-springs of nature’s wild, dashing next to the creeks that zigzag its way down into the canyon, the prominent Wild Horse Canyon that is.
You can see mosses and a variety of growing little species clumping alongside the hiking trail. It has a enormous waterfall at the peak of the trail, it’s water flows into the canyon. Usually it takes about an hour to reach the top. The even steeper trail below the canyon is more complicated to pass through, however we still do this when the weather is dry. One day last year we decided to take a hike into the canyon on a beautiful spring morning. There were so many things that I placed in our knapsacks, including a camera and our meal for lunch.
The oversized pine trees along the beginning of the trail had a stick tilting against one of them. That was what I detected when my husband and I arrived there. I said to myself that this lovely stick could be ideal for a walking support and so I took it with us in our hike. I have never used a walking stick before and this was purely on impulse. Days before, the rain had been pouring near the trail as evident with the pretty full streams that we came across during the hike. We were lucky that the weather that day was doing well for us. We sort of landed almost near the highest point of the waterfall. My partner went first and had gone across at the lowest portion of the small pool. Just as I was about to cross, I broke the number one cardinal rule of hiking – watching where you are going. I was staring at the sky when I stepped on a rock. Then, I fell hard in the water. The sprain in my ankle was so severe that I could feel the ache piercing. I put up my feet and reflected on what just happened. All of a sudden it hit me, we were at the bottom of the canyon and we had to scale back out. We realized our cell phones did not work that deep into the canyon and hills. Terrific. We had to take the quickest way to the road so that my injury could be tended immediately so we knew which path to go since we had gotten accustomed to the place. So, after convincing my husband I could make it to the road by myself while he went for the car, and after all, I had a walking stick that some kind person had just ‘happened’ to leave for me, we started the climb. I never thought that it would be that hard, if not for that walking stick, I wouldn’t be able to get out. To conclude what happened that day, I got an ankle that was seriously sprained that led me to use crutches for quite a few weeks.

Each time before taking that step, watch first. That would be the main rule for hiking safely and be alert all the time. Carry a small first aid kit, water and a little snack. If not for my good pair of hiking boots, I believe I would have permanently injured my ankle. So, wear your sturdy hiking boots. Understand what you are about to do before actually doing it. You could get yourself killed if you accidentally lose your footing as you step on a rock or a tree root or loose dirt and find yourself at the bottom of some hill.
Snakes are commonly found at hiking places so if you don’t want to step on some, always watch where your feet goes. Bring someone along when going out for a hike, rest during intervals and slow down. Furthermore, resting lets you enjoy the wonderful view. If you are new to the hiking trail, stay on course, do not be so bold venturing out in the wild. Inform your companion if you are going somewhere. Bring in your back pack only the essentials like food and water, and some outdoor handy device. Also include materials that can be of help in case of urgent situations -a flashlight and possibly a sweater for the cold. Verify first if the weather condition is suitable for hiking. If you think that rain will pour anytime soon, pack your light rain gear also.
Remember, to bring along a stick, it could really come on handy!
