The Best James Cameron Films Throughout The Years

Friday, April 8th, 2011

James Cameron is easily one of my favorite directors in Hollywood today. I don’t believe there is such a thing as a bad James Cameron movie. If he is directing it, you can expect greatness. His films have had this pressure for years, and he always seems to live up to it. In a day and age where the press is so prevalent, Cameron manages to rise above and constantly reinvent the cinematic wheel.

But which films of his are his best? This article will list and discuss my top five favorites.

One movie that must be discussed when talking about James Cameron films is the 1986 sequel, Aliens. This film is ranked on the Internet Movie Database as the number 54 film of all time, and with good reason. Cameron did this franchise justice.

Simply put, True Lies is one of the greatest action films of all time. This movie is adrenaline overload. It has got it all. Snowmobiles, fighter jets, horses jumping across buildings, motorcycle chases within a building and of course, the tango.

Another amazing James Cameron film is Titanic. Aside from its financial successes, this movie had some revolutionary CGI in it. The one scene in particular that comes to mind is the part where the boat is faced right side up and everyone is falling off. This is computer animated, but it is really hard to tell.

Avatar obviously makes the cut for any true James Cameron film. I had the privilege of going to the filming of Inside The Actor’s Studio with James Cameron, and it was amazing to hear everything he had to say about this movie. Sounds like the second installment will focus more on the underwater life of Pandora.

People have their differences in opinion, but for me, it never got better than the original Terminator film. Kyle Reese goes back in time in this 1984 classic to save Sarah Connor from an evil Terminator sent to kill her, played by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

These are just some of the best James Cameron movies. Anything he has put out is worth seeing.

The Best Harrison Ford Films Throughout The Years

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

How many major action stars are there over the age of sixty? I don’t know the correct answer to that, but there cannot be too many. One of those actors, however is without a shadow of a doubt, Harrison Ford. I would not consider Harrison Ford to be a “true” action star, in the vein of Sylvester Stallone or Steven Segal, but he has had his chair of adrenaline pumping movies. That is not to say he is limited to these roles, however.

This article will focus on some of the best Harrison Ford films of all time.

Clear and Present Danger is one movie that definitely is on the list for me. I only wish they would come out with another Jack Ryan film, rather than another Indiana Jones. Patriot Games is also a great movie from the Jack Ryan franchise.

Of course, there has to be a movie from the Star Wars saga on this list, so I will just get it out of the way now. While I loved the Empire Strikes Back, it ended on such a cliffhanger (I can’t handle cliffhangers in movies) that I have to give the nod to Return Of The Jedi.

To not include an Indiana Jones movie on this list would be blasphemous. Everyone has their preference, but I was personally too young to truly enjoy the earlier films when they came out. Consequently, my favorite from the Indiana Jones franchise is The Temple Of Doom.

Another Harrison Ford movie, which I absolutely loved, is What Lies Beneath. This is a really creepy film, and Michelle Pfeiffer is sensational as Ford’s wife. This is not a good movie to watch when you are by yourself.

One other movie that I would definitely include on this list is The Fugitive. This movie is just so good, I don’t know what else to say. I may be wrong, but I believe Tommy Lee Jones won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for this film.

These are just some of the best Harrison Ford movies. With so many great films under his resume, it is hard to narrow it down like this.

Martin Scorsese’s Greatest Films In Recent Memory

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

When discussing the greatest directors of all time, one person who is absolutely near the top of the list is Martin Scorsese. For decades, Scorsese has been churning out classic films and I don’t think he’s ever had a bad movie. It is truly remarkable that such a legend did not win his first Academy Award for Best Director until The Departed.

But which of Scorsese’s great movies have been his best? Here are my personal top five favorites.

It is tough to make a list of Martin Scorsese movies without giving praise to Taxi Driver. I saw this film for the first time in a film class at college, and I absolutely loved it. Both Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster were excellent in this movie.

Gangs Of New York was not a film that I immediately wanted to see. It was only after I heard so many positive things about this DiCaprio and Scorsese collaboration that I decided to see it. Daniel Day Lewis was spectacular as Bill the Butcher.

In an interesting choice of filmmaking, Scorsese teamed up with his new Hollywood favorite actor, Leonardo DiCaprio to make a biopic on Howard Hughes. The film we are discussing of course, is the Aviator. This is a great movie.

I would be remiss to make a list of Martin Scorsese movies without giving praise to The Last Waltz. This is more of a music documentary than true movie, but many consider this to be the best of its kind. This film chronicles the last concert of the legendary group, The Band.

Finally, I have to give mention to Casino. People go back and forth about which film is better, Casino or Goodfellas. In the end, it is a matter of personal preference, and my favorite of these two is Casino.

While I didn’t mention King Of Comedy, I feel that this movie is also one of his better, yet underrated films. Jerry Lewis shines in this one.

The Best Ridley Scott Films Throughout The Years

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

One director who is often overlooked in conversations of the greats is Ridley Scott. Sir Ridley Scott has been putting out quality films for the better part of four decades, and continues to direct fantastic movies. Few people have as many accolades and iconic films under their belt as he does.

This article will discuss what I consider to be Sir Ridley Scott’s greatest films to date.

One of the most iconic films that Ridley Scott directed was without a doubt, Thelma and Louise. This film starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon as the renegades Thelma and Louise, respectively. If you haven’t seen this film and are a fan of either of these actresses, you must.

Black Hawk Down is another great Ridley Scott film. This is one of the few films that depicts war in Africa so well. This movie just has such a real feel to it, not to mention an amazing cast in Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor and Tom Sizemore.

Gladiator is definitely my favorite Ridley Scott film of any. This movie is just awesome. From the first battle scene out in the forest with the flaming fireballs, to the last scene in which…well I will not say for those who have not seen this movie.

Blade Runner is another movie that certainly is worth mentioning on this list. Blade Runner is one of the best science fiction movies to ever be released and brought us into a futuristic world that very few films have been able to come close to.

One other movie that I feel is worthy of mentioning is Kingdom Of Heaven. Few people do war films as good as he does and this film was proof of it. No, it was not as good as Gladiator, but it was still an enjoyable film.

Did I miss one of your favorite Ridley Scott films? Honestly, I’m not surprised, as most of his films are great.

The Greatest Jeff Bridges Films In Years Past

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

This article will focus on the career and movies of Jeff Bridges. Bridges has been acting for over 40 years and has quietly established himself as one of the better actors in the industry. If you ever read magazine interviews with actors and actresses, anyone who has worked with Bridges only has great things to say. It comes as no surprise that such a great actor gets to star in great movies.

But which Jeff Bridges films have been the best? Here are my personal favorites.

The first movie on this list that I will discuss is Fearless. People often get this film confused with the Jet Li epic, but this movie is completely different. Bridges’ Fearless came out in 1993 and was directed by Peter Weir.

Arlington Road is another film that I certainly will discuss. This movie is not for the faint of heart, and is an incredibly gripping film. While Jeff Bridges is great in this film, the true star of this movie is his neighbor, Tim Robbins.

I am also going to include Iron Man on this list. Next to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, this is my favorite superhero movie ever. Bridges was just one of the many talented actors to appear in this blockbuster film.

One movie that is impossible to not include on my Jeff Bridges list is Crazy Heart. It is not so much the movie that is great, but Bridges’ performance. In this film, he plays a washed up country singer named Bad Blake. This is a character piece at its finest.

To not put The Big Lebowski on this list would be a shame. This film has become such a cult classic that bowling leagues across the country have sprouted up in its honor. This is definitely one of the better comedies of the nineties.

As it stands, this is my list. I am eagerly anticipating Tron 2, however. All the previews for it look amazing.

A Variety Of The Best Movies From The Hysterical Actor, Adam Sandler

Friday, March 25th, 2011

There have been too many great Adam Sandler movies for me to honor him with one of my honorary top five lists. Sandler has become one of the dominant comedic forces over the past fifteen to twenty years, and it comes as no surprise that his movies continue to make serious profits.

But which Adam Sandler films are the funniest? This article will highlight some of my favorites of his movies.

Of course, it is difficult to make a list of Adam Sandler movies without giving praise to the film that jumpstarted his acting career, and that film was none other than Billy Madison. This movie holds up the comedy test of time and is still hilarious.

Another fantastic movie starring Adam Sandler is Click. This movie was not at all what I expected; it actually is a very emotional film, to say the least. Regardless of whether it is a true comedy, I still loved this movie.

If you need a movie that you can just watch and laugh, and not really need to worry about keeping with the plot line, then Little Nicky is a great option. This movie is pure silliness, yet Sandler’s depiction of the Devil’s good-hearted son is rather enjoyable.

One other excellent Adam Sandler movie was Funny People. This movie was directed by Judd Apatow, and may not have been as funny as previews and the marketing campaign led us on to believe. It still managed to be quite the enjoyable film.

Another great film that stars Adam Sandler was Happy Gilmore. This movie has a ton of quotable lines that my friends and I still recite to this day.

These seem to be the best of the best Adam Sandler movies, but it is also tough to not give mention to Dirty Work, even if he wasn’t the lead role. This movie is hilarious.

The Most Memorable George Clooney Roles Throughout The Years

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Let’s talk about the films of George Clooney. Clooney got his start on television, and was a breakout star on the hit TV show ER. Eventually, he grew to be too big for this show and moved on to the silver screen. Clooney has been starring in great films ever since, and has even got his hand in directing.

But what are George Clooney’s best movies up to this point? Here are some of my favorites.

The first film that definitely makes the cut is Three Kings. This film is constantly cited as one of the better films depicting the Gulf War. In addition to Clooney this movie also happens to star Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube.

The Perfect storm is another movie that I will include on this list. This movie stars George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Dianne Lane and John C. Reilly. There is one scene in particular in this film, with a monster wave, that will stick with me forever.

It is tough to make a list of the best George Clooney movies without mentioning Up In The Air. This was a fantastic film about a man whose job it is to fire people for a living. It is a sad and funny movie, often at the same time.

Any list of Clooney films has to include The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Sure, this is an animated picture, but that does not take away from it being a great film from one of the most talented directors working today, Mr. Wes Anderson.

Finally, I feel that Michael Clayton very well might have been the performace of Clooney’s career. In this movie, George Clooney plays a “cleaner,” whose job it is to clean up corporate messes.

It is clear form going through all these films that George Clooney has been in a number of excellent movies.

Bruce Willis’ Best Performances In Throughout His Career

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

One actor who always seems to come up in the discussion of great actors of my generation (early to mid nineties was my prime) is Bruce Willis. It is not just my generation however; Bruce Willis continues to churn out excellent high action movies to this day.

This article will cite some of my personal favorite roles that Bruce Willis has played over the span of his illustrious career.

One movie that Bruce Willis starred in and ranks among my all time favorites is Sin City. This Robert Rodriguez directed comic book adaptation of the same name features a bunch of stories taking place within the same city, and it just pure awesomeness.

If you are a fan of science fiction movies, then one film that you must see is Twelve Monkeys. Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt star in this futuristic post apocalyptic thriller, and as always, Bruce Willis delivers big time in this one.

Who can have a list of Bruce Willis films without giving some love to Armageddon. I am not always the biggest fan of Michael Bay films, but the man knocked it out of the park with this movie, as it is one of the greatest action films of its generation.

Of course, it goes without saying that a film from the Die Hard series should be mentioned in this list. My personal favorite was Die Hard 3 (With A Vengeance). Maybe it is because the action was the best in my opinion, but there is no wrong answer of the four movies.

One other movie that I certainly makes my top five Bruce movies may come as a surprise, but it is none other than the original Look Who’s Talking. Sure, he simply plays the voice of Mikey, America’s most loveable child from the late 1980s, but I have nothing but good memories from this movie.

The last film I will mention on this list may come as a surprise to some, but it is none other than Lucky Number Slevin. Sure, it was just a small role, but this movie is just awesome and feel that it deserves a shout out.

A Few Of The Most Memorable Acting Performances From The Very Underrated Actor, Kevin Bacon

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

This article will focus on the illustrious career of Kevin Bacon. Kevin Bacon’s first movie was in 1978, and he has been starring in all sorts of movies ever since. He can dance, play comedic roles, serious roles, and is especially good at playing a villain in films.

This article will discuss the greatest Kevin Bacon films from throughout his career.

One of the best movies that featured Kevin Bacon is JFK. Now, I am not the biggest fan of Oliver Stone films, but I have to give praise where praise is due. JFK is just a great film, and probably the director’s second best film next to Platoon.

There is no doubt that The Air Up There makes the list for me. This is as good as sports comedies get, and it is an overall feel good movie. If you are looking for a good movie to watch with your kids, this is a good option.

Another awesome movie that stars Kevin Bacon is Sleepers. This is not an easy movie to watch, as the subject matter is very serious. This is not a recommended film to watch with the family, but nonetheless a great film.

Another fantastic film starring Kevin Bacon is A Few Good Men. This film was written by Aaron Sorkin who happens to be one of the best screenwriters in the game. This was a breakout movie for Sorkin’s career and this movie also stars Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise.

Finally, I will include Hollow Man on this list. Ok, maybe it is not actually a good movie, but is it enjoyable? Very much so. As a fan of horror films, I truly enjoyed this movie and thought it was a great concept.

These are just some of the best Kevin Bacon films of his career. With so many movies under his belt, it is tough to limit it to just five.

Denzel’s Most Impressive Acting Performances In His Career

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

There are few actors in this day and age that have as impressive a resume as the great Denzel Washington. There is a lot to like about this incredibly talented actor, and it certainly goes beyond his charm. Denzel manages to play a number of different types of roles, and at this point in time, seems to have the pick of the litter when it comes to choosing his scripts.

Here is a list of my top 5 favorite movies starring Denzel Washington.

I will start off with his 1989 classic, Glory. In Glory, Denzel stars as Private Trip, a member of the first all volunteer army for the Union during the Civil War. This is an absolutely incredible film.

Another great movie in this amazing actor’s catalogue is the 1993 drama Philadelphia. This is an incredible film about overcoming differences and pitting people of different ideals on the same side of the fence.

While it certainly did not receive critical acclaim, one movie that I thoroughly enjoyed was The Bone Collector. Mr. Washington plays a detective in this movie chasing after a gruesome serial killer, who (as the title would suggest) collects bones from his victims.

Another fantastic film to check out that stars Denzel Washington is the Spike Lee hit, Inside Man. I don’t want to spoil the details of this film, but it is the highest grossing Spike Lee film of all time and revolves around a bank heist, also starring Clive Owen.

One other film that I feel the need to mention is the most family friendly movie on this list, and that is Remember The Titans. Based around the true story of the first racially integrated high school football team in the South, this movie is a must see.

One other movie that should certainly be mentioned is the Preachers Wife. I’m actually kidding, this is one on the list you can skip.
