The Greatest Russell Crowe Roles So Far

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Let’s talk about one of the most popular actors in the movie industry: Russell Crowe. Sure he has had his fair share of legal issues and is known to have quite the temper, but you cannot deny the talent this man has when put on the silver screen. I think Crowe is one of the better actors out there, and the movie industry is a better place for having him around.

But which Russell Crowe films are the best? Here are some of my favorites.

The first film I will discuss is The Insider. This is a tremendous film that got Russell Crowe an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and the movie itself was nominated for Best Picture.

Another great film that starred Russell Crowe is 3:10 To Yuma. This is a modern day take on a Western film and has an all star cast consisting of Crowe, Christian Bale, and the wildly underrated Ben Foster. If you are looking for a good Western with some familiar faces, this is a great choice.

I will get Gladiator out of the way, because it obviously makes the list. This film is easily one of my favorites of all time and I could not picture anyone doing a better role than Russell Crowe did. Joaquin Phoenix is also incredible in this movie as the evil emperor.

It is tough to make a list of the greatest films of Russell Crowe without giving praise to his performance of John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. I could not believe he did not win the Academy Award for Best Actor In A Leading Role for this film, but after wining it the previous year for Gladiator, I guess it makes sense.

The last movie that makes the cut for me is Cinderella Man. Any time you are going to take Ron Howard, Russell Crowe, Rene Zellweger, and put them behind an inspirational boxing film based on a true story, you are going to hit gold.

As it stands, this is my personal list of the best Russell Crowe movies. I am sure he will continue to come out with excellent movies for years to come.

Mel Gibson And His Finest Roles In Years Past

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Wow, do I hate Mel Gibson. Why did he have to go throw his career and reputation down the toilet? I grew on Mel Gibson’s movies, and up until recently, I thought he was the greatest. We now know that he is truly a weak person and will probably never act again. Having said that, the man has starred in some incredible movies.

Seeing that his career is likely over, this article will discuss what I consider to be the greatest Mel Gibson movies.

One movie that I will include on this list is Ransom. What an awesome movie this was. Mel Gibson stars as a wealthy businessman who has his little son kidnapped, only to be held for a ransom. Mel’s character turns things around and puts a ransom on the kidnapper’s head.

One movie that must be mentioned on any list of great Mel Gibson films is Braveheart. I haven’t tried to watch this movie recently, but I truly hope that Mel Gibson’s recent antics won’t tarnish the role of William Wallace for me. This remains one of my favorite films of all time.

Another movie that I am not ashamed to admit I liked was What Women Want. This movie had the makings of a romantic comedy, but it was rated R so I had faith. It is actually a pretty enjoyable movie, and a very funny concept.

One underrated film that starred Mel Gibson was Payback. This movie is about a man who is left to die after his best friend and wife betray him. Everything that happens after is awesome.

Finally, I will include The Patriot as one of my favorite Mel Gibson movies. Mel stars as a war veteran who must lead a resistance against British rule around the time of the Revolutionary War. Heath Ledger is in this film as well, and is great.

As it stands, this is my all time list of my favorite Mel Gibson movies. I doubt we will see any more movies from him, so this list is probably not going to change.

Joe Pesci’s Most Impressive Performances In Throughout His Career

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Joe Pesci is one of the most underrated actors of the past few decades. Maybe that is because he has taken ample time off over the last ten years and has faded from the public spotlight. Not that he was ever one to enjoy the Hollywood fame, but there are very few movies that he has been a part of in recent years.

This article will highlight some of the best Joe Pesci movies of his career.

One movie that has to be mentioned when discussing the best Joe Pesci films is Home Alone. The man tends to be driven more toward serious and dramatic films, but the casting crew knocked it out of the park when they selected Pesci for this comedic role.

Another amazing Joe Pesci film was Goodfellas. This just might be my favorite Pesci Scorcese collaboration. It is truly amazing what a great supporting role Joe delivered with this film, and it came as no surprise that he won an Oscar for it.

One movie that must be mentioned when talking about movies that Pesci has starred in is Casino. Oh man, this has to be the best we have ever seen him. This is as good a villain as they come and it is amazing he did not get nominated for this role.

Another exceptionally great movie starring Joe Pesci is My Cousin Vinny. This movie nabbed Marisa Tomei the 1993 Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. If you have never seen this movie, put it on the list.

Another film that has to be mentioned on any great list of Joe Pesci films is Raging Bull. In my opinion, this very well might be the greatest boxing film of all time. That is saying something, considering most of the Rocky movies, Million Dollar Baby, and Cinderella Man have come out since.

Hopefully there is at least one movie on this epic list of Joe Pesci films that you have yet to see.

Nicholas Cage’s Best Performances In The Last Two Decades

Monday, March 14th, 2011

If you want to talk about prolific actors who continue to churn out movies year after year, Nicholas Cage has to be at the top of the list. Sure, the guy has found himself in financial difficulties, which may help to explain his current splurge of roles in a new movie almost every two months, but the guy can act and remains one of my favorite actors.

For whatever the reason, here are my personal favorite Nicholas Cage films in recent memory.

I will start out by discussing Lord Of War, a film in which Nicholas Cage plays Yuri Orlov, a Jewish arms dealer that rises from nothing to become a lead supplier of guns in the African wars. Jared Leto also stars in this film and plays a very convincing druggie.

Plain and simple there would not be a Fast And Furious franchise without its predecessor, Gone In 60 Seconds. Nicholas Cage was the man in this high speed action film (no pun intended). Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Michele Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster all owe whatever careers they have to Nicholas Cage and crew for this one.

Another movie of his I feel the need to mention is National Treasure. While I do not love the franchise, you cannot question its box office success. I would be highly surprised if we do not see at least one more film from this franchise.

I would be remiss to make a list of Nicholas Cage films without mentioning Con Air. In Con Air, he plays Cameron Poe, a retired marine who is imprisoned for an act of self defense and has to get through John Malkovich of all people, before he can get home to see his daughter for the first time.

I feel the need to mention Ghost Rider. This film may not have been everything it could have been, but in no part was that Nicholas Cage’s fault. Cage did all he could to bring honor to the role of Johnny Blaze and Ghostrider, however the production and budget was just not there to make this movie one of the comic book greats.

Hopefully there are one or more films on this list from this incredibly prolific actor that you have yet to see.

The Most Memorable Robert De Niro Films Of All Time

Monday, March 14th, 2011

If there were a hall of fame for Hollywood actors and actresses, there is no doubt that Robert De Niro would be a unanimous first ballot choice. He is quite possibly the greatest living actor and has been consistently churning out classic films for well over three decades.

This article will highlight some of Robert De Niro’s most prestigious films in which he has starred.

The first film I will mention in this article is Taxi Driver. This movie, originally released in 1976, depicts Robert De Niro as a Vietnam War veteran, and is very much a political commentary on the emotional trauma many veterans of this war went through.

Another great movie from this incredibly talented actor is The Score. Also starring Edward Norton, in this film Robert De Niro plays a talented jewelry thief nearing the end of his career, but has one more heist he wants to pull off.

Another film that must be mentioned any time you talk about the best of the best Robert De Niro movies is without a shadow of a doubt, Casino. This movie is directed by the great Martin Scorcese and also stars Joe Pesci. Robert plays Sam Rothstein, a very powerful casino owner who plays by his own rules out in Las Vegas.

Sleepers is another Robert De Niro film that makes the cut for me. Make no mistake, this movie is not easy to watch. While De Niro may not be the forefront of the film, he certainly adds to this film’s brilliance. This movie also stars Brad Pitt, Billy Crudup, Dustin Hoffman and Kevin Bacon.

Finally, I felt that A Bronx Tale was a film that was worth mentioning. This is one of the few mob films that stars Robert De Niro as the good guy! Chazz Palmienteri, who also happened to write the script, plays the bad guy in this one.

Hopefully there is one or more films from the great Robert De Niro that you have yet to see on this list.

A Variety Of The Most Memorable Acting Performances From The Incredibly Underrated Actor, Tommy Lee Jones

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

Tommy Lee Jones is one of the quietly underrated actors of his generation. Jones was born in Texas, and his Southern drawl is part of his appeal in many of the movies that he is featured in. I don’t think there are many actors that can play a cop or detective better than Jones, however saying so does not do his versatility justice. He can play any role.

Let’s take a look at some of the greatest Tommy Lee Jones films of his long career.

The Fugitive is, simply put, one of my favorite movies of the nineties. It is hard to imagine anyone else in this movie besides Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. The “waterfall” scene remains one of my favorite scenes of any action movie. If you are a fan of action movies, then you must see The Fugitive.

Another great film starring Tommy Lee Jones was No Country For Old Men. This movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and with good reason. Jones plays the part of an aging cop in a small desert town to perfection. Joel and Ethan Coen directed this movie and it is one of my favorite films that these brothers have put out.

I would be remiss to make a list of Tommy Lee Jones’ best movies without including Under Siege. I have not heard anyone talk about this movie in years, but when it came out, this was easily one of my favorite action movies. This is probably Steven Segal’s best movie and he plays the part of a cook to perfection.

When it comes to Men In Black, I liked the original more. Who would have thought that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones would make such a good team together? Jones plays the serious role while Will Smith provides the comedic relief.

Finally, I will include Olver Stone’s JFK on this list. This film focuses on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and how there was more to it than originally thought. Kevin Kostner stars in this movie as well.

Hopefully there are one or more films from Tommy Lee Jones’ catalog that you have not yet seen. If you need a good place to get started, I highly recommend the above mentioned flims.

The Best Paul Rudd Roles So Far

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

When it comes to the funniest actors out there right now, one person who has to be mentioned is Paul Rudd. Guys seem to like him and girls definitely love him. Paul Rudd has been showing up in virtually every good comedy to come out in the past few years, and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

But which of his movies are the best? Here are some of my favorite Paul Rudd movies of the past few years.

One movie that I absolutely loved was Knocked Up. Seriously, any time this movie is on television, I have to watch it. It is both funny and heartfelt, and while I don’t really care for Katherine Heigl, everyone else in this film is great.

Another movie that stars Paul Rudd that is definitely one of my favorites is Clueless. This is a classic 1990s film and a role that Paul Rudd himself probably is not proud of. He actually plays a serious role in this film, for a change.

Another movie that I definitely have to include on this list is Wet Hot American Summer. This movie is one of my all time favorite comedies and Rudd is only part of the reason why. If you like dry films focusing around summer camp in the 1980s, look no further.

I Love You, Man definitely makes the list for me as well. This movie focuses around a duo of newly formed friends in Paul Rudd and Jason Segal. This movie has some truly uncomfortable scenes, as Rudd’s character tries to befriend another man. It is much funnier than I make it sound.

Anchorman is another film that certainly makes my list. This one might be my favorite Paul Rudd movie of any. Even more than five years after its release, you still hear people quote the iconic Will Ferrell character all the time.

So these are most of Paul Rudd’s funniest and enjoyable films to date. There is no doubt that there will be others to add to this list in the next few years.

The Best Sean Penn Performances In His Career

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Sean Penn is one actor who has definitely been the center of a good amount of controversy in recent years. It seems he cannot stay out of the spotlight, whether he means to or not.

I cannot say I am the biggest fan of Sean Penn as a person, but as an actor? There are few who do it better. Here are some of my favorite films that he has starred in.

One movie that is tough to glance over when discussing Sean Penn movies is Milk, in which he potrays true life political figure Harvey Milk. This was a great movie, and even if you are not familiar with the story of Harvey Milk, chances are you will enjoy this film.

One other great movie starring Sean Penn that I would like to discuss is Mystic River. As far as movies taking place in Boston go, this is one of the best ones out there. With an all star cast and legendary director Clint Eastwood behind the helm, it came as no surprise that this movie was amazing.

Another fantastic film that stars Sean Penn was The Game. This movie was directed by David Fincher and was released in 1997. If you like psychological thrillers, this is one of the better ones out there. This movie also stars Michael Douglas.

In the movie I Am Sam, Penn stars as a mentally retarded father fighting for custody of his young daughter. This is an incredibly moving film and quite the impressive display of acting by Penn. It came as little surprise that he was nominated for an Oscar for this role.

Finally, one other movie that nabbed Penn an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role was 1999′s Sweet And Lowdown. This is a great music film.

Is there a film that you like that I may have missed? I’m not surprised, as this was a difficult list to make and I had to make the cutoff somewhere.

Some Of The Most Memorable Films From The Talented Thespian, Morgan Freeman

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Morgan Freeman is, in my opinion, one of the best actors of his generation. I may even go on to say he is one of the greatest actors of all time. Not to mention the fact that he is probably the best narrator of all time. I mean, that voice! Would people really buy Visa if it weren’t for his voice overs?

In my opinion, the following five movies are the best Morgan Freeman movies ever.

The first movie to be mentioned on my list also happens to be ranked as the number one film of all time on the IMDB (the Internet Movie Database). That film, of course is the Shawshank Redemption. What an amazing film.

Another film starring Morgan Freeman which should be mentioned is Se7en. This film comes in at number 28 on the IMDB top 250 films of all time. Directed by David Fincher and also starring Brad Pitt, this 1995 psychological murder mystery thriller is one of Freeman’s best.

Also on my all time list of favorite Morgan Freeman films is Glory. In this film, which happens to be one of the greatest Civil War movies ever made (if not the greatest), Freeman plays Sergeant Major John Rawlins. An inspirational film to say the least.

No list of Morgan Freeman films would be complete without giving mention to Bruce Almighty. I mean, when you are being asked to play the part of God in a film, I think it is safe to say you have made it. Unless you’re Alanis Morrisette and you happen to nab the part in Dogma.

Another great film of his is Million Dollar Baby. This is another of my all time favorites, and this is the film that finally nabbed Mr. Freeman an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

If I forgot any films on this list, I apologize ahead of time. It is a tough list to make when dealing with an actor of Morgan Freeman’s stature.

The Best Spacey Roles In His Career

Friday, March 4th, 2011

One actor who is better that most of his counterparts in the same age demographic is Kevin Spacey. Mr. Spacey has not been in Hollywood for as long as many of the other legends similar to him in age, but he has risen to the top and has distinguished himself as one of the most talented actors in the industry.

This article will discuss what I consider to be Kevin Spacey’s best films up to this point.

The Usual Suspects is the first and arguably best movie on this list. This is certainly one of the movies that Spacey will be remembered for most; it is an incredible role in an incredible film.

Another fantastic movie that he has starred in is American Beauty. This movie is ranked as the number 40 best film of all time according to imdb.com and not surprisingly, won the Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year.

Outbreak is another film that definitely makes the cut for me. I do not know why I am attracted to movies about terrible things like this, but apparently I am not the only one. This film did very well at the box office, and I’m not surprised.

Another film that must be included on this list is Se7en. Se7en is probably my favorite movie from director David Fincher, who also directed Fight Club, Zodiac, Panic Room, and the upcoming film, The Social Network.

I would be remiss to make a list of the best Kevin Spacey movies without giving praise to The Life Of David Gale. This is such a powerful film from beginning to end. Easily one of my favorite films of his.

These are just some of the greatest movies that have starred or featured Kevin Spacey.
