Movie Analysis: Voyage Into Space – The Astonishing Japanese Classic
Tuesday, April 6th, 2010If you love to watch classic action movies that have deep moral and ethical significance, then look no further than the Japanese classic, “Voyage Into Space.” This classic has, of course, been around for a long time, and is still loved by millions of people around the world. And for good reason. This science fiction classic has everything you could want in a movie. Perhaps one of the greatest reasons for its lasting success is its combination of a simple story with cutting edge technology.
Our story kicks off with a covert government society creating a giant android that will shelter the earth against any and all unknown invaders. The android is constructed to be controlled by a simple looking watch that doubles as an advanced communication device. The only warning is that the initial character who communicates to the giant robot using the watch communication mechanism will be the one who it will eternally be compliant too.
And the person who speaks firstly to the huge automaton is of course a youthful, guiltless boy. He is only playing when he first picks up the timepiece, inadvertently of course, and speaks to the robot. But imagine his incredulity when the automaton obeys his every demand, and submissively protects the boy from all manner of harm that comes his way during this classic section of film making.
At first, it would look as if that the boy has discovered a steadfast acquaintance, proficient of shooting missiles from his fingertips, and picking the boy up and taking him on fast jaunts around the globe. But this, of course, can’t last very long as the planet is shortly invaded by unspeakable transformed aliens from the far reaches of space. This is when the real test of their companionship is determined. Will the boy and his new found robot companion risk all to protect the earth? Will they even be triumphant?
At first it looks like as if the robot will be victorious and protect the planet from the invading monsters, but all is not well. The invading monster is made from a extremely unstable matter, and if he is shot, the complete globe will be damaged. So shooting the alien dead is not an option for our authoritative android conqueror. He must react to the international hazard with severe measures indeed.
And in a disconsolate allegory of self sacrifice, the android grabs the monster, and carries him deep into the pits of space, where he will pose no risk to the blameless population of the earth. This, of course, leaves the young man without his friend, but he learns a indispensable moral. Sometimes you must go to great sacrifices to save your friends, even to the point of sacrificing your own life. If you would like to watch a mesmerizing picture with a great moral message, look no further than “Voyage Into Space.
