It’s now the coldest time of the year, fact. We can feel the cold air even when ensconced in our living rooms with the heating on.

Some like it hot, some like it cold, I belong to the former. Waking up to a white blanket doesn’t excite me and make we want to run outside and make snowmen, quite the opposite in fact!

A fireplace blower is a great idea if you have a fireplace you use regularly. Instead of the heat just reaching the hearth as it normally does, it will warm the entire room.

The fan basically spreads the heat throughout the room that the fireplace generates. This means that you can do without the heating, thus saving you money. The heat will even reach the far corners of the room so everyone will benefit.

Getting into a freezing cold bed is never pleasant, and you tend to need the heating on full blast while you shiver. A heated blanket puts an end to the need for the heating to be on.

It’s up to you if you want to leave it on all night, or just turn it down. Once you are all snuggled in and cozy, the heat generated from the blanket and your own body will have you in a blissful slumber.

If you have a skylight; chances are that there are draughts coming through it. Fitting a simple blind that completely covers the window will keep the cold air out and the warm air in.

Try one or more of these suggestions and you will see a big difference is what it is costing you to stay warm throughout the winter.

More Homes Should Have Radiant Heat

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Frigid winter weather has moved in and your thoughts may have turned to how nice it would be to have radiant heat in the house on those too-cold mornings. Radiant heat is typically added to bathroom floors and possibly kitchen floors, but other rooms are neglected. That’s because the cost of decking out the whole house with radiant floor heat can be on the high side.

What is the cost of installing radiant heated floors if you choose to have it put in after your house is already built? If you do choose to have them put in a preexisting home, you will probably have to go with electric heat rather than hydronic radiant heat. This is because it is just too tedious and expensive to put in a hydronic system for just a room or two. Electric radiant heat can be affordable to install in a room or two while hydronic is not.

Farsighted homeowners who installed radiant heat in their house when it was built have the luxury of enjoying it in every room, but most houses do not include it. The best time to incorporate radiant heating in a house is certainly when it is being built, but builders want to cut costs and so this pleasurable but costly element is usually left out.

Installing electric radiant heated floors will involve tearing the floors up to put electric heating pads underneath them. Obviously, a professional or someone who really knows what they are doing should do something like this. In the end though, if you don’t spend too much, it can definitely worth it for the comfort it will provide.

Radiant heat is always preferred over forced air because it is a silent and gentle heat that does not dry your skin as much. To understand what radiant heat feels like, think of sitting in the sun and feeling the warm rays cover your body. It is a heat that feels good and is able to heat the room evenly as opposed to forced air where the air is always rushing from room to room.

Sprinkling System Part 2

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Now that you have cut all your pipe, put them back into the trenches that you’ve dug. Reminder: trenches should only be 8 inches deep. Now make sure that your pipe is the accurate length.

Next, place all of your risers in with the pipes. You want to place everything together now to make sure it all fits well. Don’t glue anything, we are just making sure that if you followed the plans you drew up and that everything is the correct length.

If you have cement in between some of your yard, don’t worry; you don’t have to go through the cement. Simply place tape at the end of a PVC pipe and push through the ground so that you come up on the other side of where you dug your trench. This will make is so that nothing in your yard is missed when your sprinklers work.

Attach a t-connections to your water supply.

This is also a good time to set up your manifold. This includes your emergency shut off valve or any other switches.

Now that your system is all perfectly laid out you can go ahead and glue everything together. Make sure that the glue you bought says PVC pipe glue. There is other pipe glue that wont work on PVC pipes very well.

Before you bury the pipes in the trenches, do a quick test and double check everything again. You’ll want to make sure that your pipes don’t leak, everything works correctly, and that the water reaches everywhere you want it to.

With your system working and everything set up properly you can finally bury the pipes. Pack the dirt around your risers and make sure that they will stay in place. Always remember that if you find any major problems plumbers will be able to help.

Sprinkler Systems

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Having a sprinkler system installed in your yard can make all the difference when it comes to that beautiful green grass that you want. A lot of times when you just have a simple sprinkler that you need to carry around your yard, you’ll end up forgetting and getting those ugly yellowish brown patches that can be so frustrating. If you are thinking about installing a sprinkler system here is a basic list of what you need to do to install it.

First, you want to find out if there are any regulations in your community or neighborhood about the pipe size or backflow prevention. If you hire someone to put in the sprinklers for you they will already know all the regulations for your area.

You also need to know about your utility pipes or electrical wires that you have running about your yard. It would be horrible to hit one of these and have no light in your home for a couple days. If you hire someone they will find out and plan ways around these things.

Find out about your water pressure. If your water pressure is too low it can cause problems reaching all areas of your yard, but if it is too high you can face other pressure problems.

You’ll first want to plan out your system throughout your yard. You’ll want to have it start at your water source and work out from there.

After everything is all planned out and you have drawn out all your plans, including dimensions, start digging. You’ll need to know exactly where you will be digging your trenches around your yard. Remember to be careful to avoid any utility lines.

By now hopefully you have chosen your pipes, risers, and sprinkler heads. You’ll start by laying down your pipes perfectly flat in your trench. Have everything laid Down and in place before you start gluing anything.

If you choose to do this yourself you will have to measure everything exactly as well as cut your pipes. To get the best cut use only PVC ratcheting cutters.

Starting a new company can be very difficult and cost a lot of money. Sometimes some business owners will go to great lengths to save on whatever they possibly can, including plumbing costs for their new office or business. It can be really convenient to have a professional plumber on hand who can do the job the right way the first time. So, while you are working on your new business, they will make sure that all of the city requirements will be met and that your company will be up and ready to go when you are.

Have you heard of high pressure jetting when it comes to cleaning out clogs in your drains? I’ve found that plumbers have mentioned it to me as a solution before but what exactly is high pressure jetting and when is it necessary to use it?

If you think a plumber’s job can be rough and dirty now, just think about when they didn’t have an auger to use. If they couldn’t clean a pipe they would have to resort to pulling it up and taking it apart. But what do plumbers resort to now if an auger doesn’t work? s Yes, there are some clogs that augers don’t work for.

If there is a lot of soot and grease buildup it can become very strong. Even working on it for a while an auger still might not work.

These types of clogs are can be found in many restaurant from cooking and draining food items that will quickly cause a strong build up. Jetting would be the perfect as well as the only real solution to this situation. Jetting is also used in residential areas as well.

You have to love all of the developments that science and inventors have been able to do to make our lives easier. Because of these developments, most plumbers now are able to own a high pressure jetting system.

This means that when we need pressure jetting the price will now be low and affordable. You don’t have to be a fancy restaurant to be able to afford it.

Do not try to rent one of these systems and use them yourself if you are not a trained professional. You could end up wasting money and still not be able to work the machine properly to relieve the clog from the drain.

You will be amazed at the results that you get from high pressure jetting. This really never has to be done more than once a year in your home because of how well it works. If you have any questions call and talk to your trusted plumber about it, and find out if they offer these great services.

FIREPLACE OPTIONS

Monday, February 15th, 2010

The warm summer is coming to a close and we’ll be preparing for winter soon enough. As you begin to prepare, start thinking about some other great heating options you might enjoy, like a new fireplace. These are not only beautiful but a great way to pass those cold months by.

If you are exploring options of getting a fireplace in your home, here are just a few things to think about as you do it.

You first want to pick out the perfect room in your home to place your new fireplace. Is there a bare wall that you don’t know what to do with? Try adding a gorgeous fireplace to spice things up.

The next thing to think about when adding a fireplace is to think about the size. Once you have the room this should be an easy decision. You also have to think about if you want a gas fireplace or a real one.

Real fireplaces in the home aren’t extinct yet. People still love gathering around them. I will have to say I prefer the gas fireplace with the easy turn on and off button though.

You also need to know the differences between a vent gas fireplace and a ventless one. A ventless fireplace can be placed anywhere in your home, it doesn’t have to have a chimney. A vented fireplace is typically placed under the chimney to provide a vent.

Usually ventless are less expensive to install and you still have the option of a gas fireplace anywhere in your home. This can be a fun addition to any room.

If you have other specific questions it is best to contact a professional that will help you install the fireplace in your home. They will be able to help you understand how the fireplace you’ve chosen will work in your home.

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Here are just a few things that you can do to avoid a clog or help maintain your disposal. We all understand how frustrating it can be with something goes wrong with it.

Avoid coffee grounds, banana peels, eggshells, and potato peels if you want to help prevent a clog from developing in our disposal. Because we can form clogs a lot quicker and easier than we think, it is best to avoid these things.

Have you heard that you need to throw eggshells in the disposal because it will help keep the blades sharp? Whether that it true or not, most professionals feel that eggshells can actually cause major blockage over time.

So, next time you are about to throw some peels, eggshells or coffee grounds into your garbage disposal, think twice. Watch everything you put down the drain to make sure you are not causing any major clogs.

Avoiding clogs is a lot more convenient than having to deal with them. If you really want to avoid clogs make sure that you never run your disposal without sufficient water. Your food wont be able to go down the pipes by themselves, it needs the water.

If you want to help clean and maintain your disposal, here a few things that will help. Throw down some ice cubes and lemon peel pieces. Doesn’t sound like much but this will help maintain your disposal when they have been ground with some water down your disposal.

If you find that you have a clog there are some simple things you can do if you feel comfortable doing them yourself. First, disconnect and remove the drain trap. When it is removed check for any clogs that you can see.

It might need to be cleaned with an auger if the clog is far in and you are unable to see it. If you need a quick fix, many plumbers in Utah will be able to help. Make sure they are reliable and will work with your schedule, day and night.

Swamp Cooler Maintenance Tips

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

In the most ideal situation we would be able to turn on our swamp coolers with no problems and have it deliver cool air to us all day long. Sadly, swamp coolers need to be watched closely to make sure that they are running correctly, and putting out enough cold air. You should check it regularly to make sure it is not working too hard and the cooler is working efficiently.

Imagine your swamp cooler like it is a car. A car requires its oil to be changed, its tires rotated, its battery recharged, etc to make sure that it is taken care of. An HVAC motor also needs to regular attention for it to work its best.

Swamp coolers work best when the temperatures are higher than 85 degrees. It saves on water usage and energy. You should also turn on the water pump at least five minutes before you turn on the fan so that the pads are saturated with water first so the cooler is more effective.

Be sure that you give your swamp cooler the proper maintenance. Check the fan belt to be sure it isn’t sagging. If it is visibly sagging more than about an inch it should be replaced.

Also check the cooler pads. Be sure they are in good shape, as well as the casement or tray. If there are any cracks, holes, or leaks its time to call an air conditioning repairman.

The water should be at its proper level in the tray for it to work properly. The water should reach just below the top of the tray, and can be adjusted with the float arm if it doesn’t. Be sure that everything else is in working form, including the pump and motor.

Winterize your swamp cooler once the weather turns colder. It’s important to clean the buildup deposits so that they don’t harden during the cold months and become impossible to remove. Clean out the tray and drain all water completely.

You will no longer be using the swamp cooler during the winter, so it is important to turn off the water line to it. This will prevent the water line from freezing. Remove the panels during the wintertime every month or so to clean out any debris that gets caught inside to keep the pads from getting ruined by leaves and debris.
