Earning A Living With Horror Movies
Sunday, August 22nd, 2010Think about all of the movies that are loved the most, or hated the most, or actually thought about the most, and there is a very good chance that some of them are horror movies. Scary films have been known to be box office gold for years, and for very good reason. People just love to sit in the dark getting sacred stupid with each other.
Maybe the reason that they are liked so much is right there. Folks can face their fears while knowing that none of it is really real. They can enjoy the thrill of the adrenaline rush, without actually running for their lives from crazed maniacs. At the very least they are a great way to get a date to jump into a lap, or at least grab the hand of someone else. Yes, people do like to get scared sometimes.
But while they were screaming and jumping around like little kids in the dark, did they ever think about who is behind those films? What kinds of jobs could someone get that allowed them to make one of those films? Then instead of being just another geek at the film festival, they could have their own booth and be taking it to the bank by selling scary movies and memorabilia.
The reason it is such an easy opening opportunity is because so many of them are done so cheaply. It is no film making secret that scary movies can be made on the cheap and still turn a profit. In fact, some have gone on to tremendous success after being made on the lowest of the low budgets. So with no money to spend they cannot hire big names. Here is where newbies, the vast unknown field of talent, can get that elusive first gig.
Perhaps a makeup artist could use some help with all of that fake blood getting splashed all over the set. At the very least they will need someone to help clean it up. And those makeup people need a break too, so if that is what you are into, think about doing ghouls, ghosts, and creepy things. Many very famous makeup artists started out doing cheap B-films in their hungrier days.
As for budding screenwriters, surely they can cobble together a good script for a fright fest. It will be easier when it is realized that all horror plots are very much alike. Only the monsters really change. So they can go back to the classic screams and see if they can do an update or add a particularly sick twist to the plot. Again, many screenwriters did the same thing to get started.
And as far as the acting goes, if an actor can scream really good, and if they are attractive enough, it should not be too hard to find a small role, in which the character gets killed off pretty early on in the film, and start building a resume reel thereby. Again, many of these types of films are very low budget, so the return in any work put into to them could be substantial.
The whole attitude to take is that horror movies are fun to watch, so they must be fun to make. If an artist is serious about breaking into the business, they should consider making themselves available for the small roles in the small films. It is a great way to build up some real experience, and most have a blast doing it.
